Bluenose II skooner in Lunenburg, Canada

BlueNose the Nova Scotia Ambassador

BlueNose is the Champion, Icon and Ambassador of Nova Scotia says the official website that describes this famous Canadian symbol.

Bluenose II is a replica of the original schooner that was launched in 1921 and used for fishing and racing – undefeated in international competitions for 17 years.

This ship still sails in the Atlantic Ocean waters of Nova Scotia. My husband and I took a sailing cruise on it in 2008, too – what a great experience! We were even allowed to take the helm for a while, under supervision of course… In the first place I thought it was not a big deal, but I was wrong… the water was rough and the boat big and heavy 🙂  – if you are interested taking a cruise, here are details on the schedule.

BTW: I’m proud to say that I sold a big canvas print of this picture awhile ago. Thank you buyer from Gladstone, MI! 🙂

Lunenburg

The schooner’s home-place is Lunenburg, a small historic town in Nova Scotia. However sometimes the ship also comes to Halifax, like for the Tall Ship festival. Due to these events and also all the boats floating along the coast, Nova Scotia got the surname of “Canada’s Ocean Playground”. You can see this on all the license plates of this Canadian Province.

It was a cold foggy day of September, but this is normal weather for Atlantic Canada. The boat was anchored in the harbor. Lucky us to see it again! As we walked up and down the pier, I took shots in both directions.

I also liked the perspective of the harbor with the ship in the foreground.

You can tell that I love boats and Atlantic Canada, and not only in Newfoundland 🙂

Here are two more versions of the famous Bluenose II in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. You can see the fog in the background.

How to eat an apple in 9 easy steps by Tatiana Travelways

How To Eat An Apple In 9 Easy Steps

How to eat an apple – poster

Want to eat an apple? I’ll tell you how the easiest way 🙂

I’m not saying that you don’t know how to do it, but just in case, I made this poster with 9 easy steps, clearly shown. Everything it’s so much more feasible when it’s explained and especially when a schema is available… Right? 🙂

Here it is – don’t rush, but take your time…

How to eat an apple in 9 easy steps - poster by Tatiana Travelways

I made it for a contest in a photography group. The moderator didn’t like the black background, but I didn’t change it – I think that the whole process on how to eat an apple is much more visible on black than on white, making the pieces standing out… what do you think?

Now, I don’t really know what was in my head when I made this poster so small, but if you want to keep it as reference, you can still have it. It will fit well above the counter of your kitchen, for example – this way you will be able to treat yourself with a healthy apple anytime, with no worries 😉

Oh, I almost forgot: the poster I made on How to eat an apple was possible after my visit to the Byward market in Ottawa, Canada.

This was a special organic apple that I bought at the market, and the hardest part of the project was done by my husband who ate it – he’s the vegan of the family 🙂

Rodney in the silent mode by Tatiana Travelways

Rodney in the silent mode – A beautiful wreck boat in Harbor Grace Newfoundland

Rodney in the silent mode is the title I gave to this picture, and I took it on the East Coast of Newfoundland.

Rodney in the silent mode - a wreck boat in Newfoundland by Tatiana Travelways

Rodney is a small fishing wooden row-boat built and used in Newfoundland by local fishermen. You can see them often floating in the small coves on the Atlantic coast. I also have several of these boats on my “Quiet Morning on Fogo Island Newfoundland” post.

It looks like this old Rodney has been abandoned on the side of the water after doing her duty for many years. The nature around took over and she was just abiding in her last resting place… but she was still beautiful. A Rodney in the silent mode… different huh…

Somehow I felt sentimentally attached to her and her condition and I thought to make her last forever, so I took her “portrait”.

Now, everyone can see her and even have her portrait framed on a wall. If you like her, click on the picture for more information on print types, sizes and prices:Rodney in the silent mode - framed art print by Tatiana Travelways

Treasury at Petra, Jordan, by Richard Krebs

The Treasury at Petra, Jordan, a well-preserved temple from ancient times, is one of the most elaborate temples in the ancient Arab city of Petra.  It was originally built at the beginning of the first century A.D. as a mausoleum and crypt. The entire structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face.

Legends

Legend has it that bandits hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level.  Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn.  Another legend is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh at the time of Moses. The various mythological figures carved on the face carry numerous stories and legends. The Treasury at Petra, Jordan, has been well-preserved due to its overhanging roof, which has protected the carvings from the elements.

Why visit Petra

I visited Petra in March, 2016. Friends told me about this incredible structure called “The Treasury”.  It had been on my bucket list for years. I could not wait to walk down the cobblestone walkway that leads to the “treasure”.  After walking for a good while I came to a sharp curve with steep walls on either side.  Rounding the curve I came face to face with The Treasury.  What a breathtaking experience!  Realizing that people had created this beautiful, enormous edifice 2000 years ago made me marvel at the ability of ancient people to create such a building.  BTW: Petra was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 and is considered by many as one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.

Quiet morning on Fogo Island

Quiet Morning on Fogo Island Newfoundland

It was a quiet morning on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.

Fishing Boat Art Print featuring the photograph Fishing Boat At Rest by Tatiana Travelways

Fogo Island is a dream location for people who want to relax and get out from a busy modern life, but also for artists and photographers.

Don’t take me wrong though. Fogo Island life is quite busy with a lot of fishing activity – they also have in industrial fishery. But in the weekend everything and everybody is at rest, abiding to the weekend rules. This is how the fishery looks like Sunday morning:

Sunday Morning On Fogo Island by Tatiana Travelways

That weekend the Atlantic Ocean water of Fogo coves was like a mirror – what a beauty!

It was also laundry day at the house nearby the place where we were renting our apartment for a 2 weeks vacation. I think it was during the weekend… 🙂

Wandering around with my camera, I noticed this so inviting scene of freshly washed clothes hanging down from the clothesline, on a calm blue sky, with the moon still up above. What can be more relaxing and serene?

Fish Drying Salvage Newfoundland by Tatiana Travelways

Fish Drying in Salvage Newfoundland

Fish drying in Salvage Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Fish Drying in Salvage Newfoundland by Tatiana Travelways

This is another photo from Salvage Newfoundland, that to me was a photographers paradise – a scenic place with so much to see… Same kind of overcast day as in my lobster fishing boat image: clouds and stormy-like light which I love a lot because of the subtle tones…

Fish drying gives rural people of Newfoundland comfort in the winter months

Cut fish for the winter in Salvage, NFL

The fishermen in Salvage often dry salted cod in plain air, sun and wind, by the ocean. – You may think it’s not sanitary but the concentrated salt keeps all the germs away. They are not even attacked by flies if the fish is properly prepared. And the Salvage-ans (if I can call them so), and Newfoundland fishermen know how to do it.

It looks like the methods of fish drying in Salvage Newfoundland vary from one fisherman to another… Here for example the cod is not laying on fishing nets, but hangs from ropes, above the water…Well, they know what they are doing 🙂

I just loved to photograph this row of hanging fish.

Yes, what I like most is to take documentary travel photography. I think however that I also got some interesting patterns and textures here 🙂

If you like Newfoundland and find this lifestyle unique and interesting, you can have these images printed for your wall. They are available in my collection at Fine Art America. Just click on them to see more information on sizes and prices.

Lobster fishing boats Salvage Newfoundland and Labrador - by Tatiana Travelways

Lobster fishing boats Salvage Newfoundland, Canada

This is a Photo of Lobster fishing boats Salvage Newfoundland and Labrador province of Canada.

Lobster fishing boats Salvage Newfoundland and Labrador - by Tatiana travelways

It was a cloudy, rainy day in the area of Trinity bay, Newfoundland (in the beginning of September). I like taking photos in these kind of weather conditions. I simply loved all the cadet blue gray tones of the sky, clouds, landscape and water in contrast with the colorful fishing boats. For sure it’s the foggy weather that made people paint their fishing boats and fishing tools in bright colors – Orange and red are the most used – beautiful!

Salvage is a small fishing village on the Atlantic Ocean, Canada. Obviously, fishing is the main activity that people are doing for a living here. I’m not an expert in fishing but I believe that we are seeing a lobster fishing scene, considering all the lobster traps aligned on the wooden wharf. The buoy floating in the water marks the place where lobster traps were placed.

I was particularly attracted by the reflections of the boats in the mirror calm water of the bay, that looked almost metallic. Those tones somehow remind me of the blue pigeon colors.

This is just one image from a series of photographs of fishing boats in Salvage Newfoundland. I’ll have a whole article on this beautiful picturesque area of the Atlantic Canada.

The picture is available as art print at Fine Art America and you can see an example here. Click on it for more information and options

Rough water on the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland – Atlantic Canada

Tempestuous Art Print featuring the photograph Tempestuous Bonavista by Tatiana Travelways

It was a windy day in Cape Bonavista when I visited this place in the beginning of September, 2008. Located on the northeastern shore of Newfoundland, on the tip of the peninsula with the same name,  I think it’s rare when it’s not windy there… In this tempestuous weather, the water seem to always be rough ricocheting on the rocky shore. – It looks almost like effervescent.

It is beautiful though 🙂

Hard to believe, but in Newfoundland there are calm days when with mirror like waters, reflecting boats, shores and fisherman’s shacks. These and other pictures from Newfoundland are available as art prints at Fine Art America and you can see them here.

Challis Idaho

Challis Idaho, a quiet historic town

Challis Idaho, a quiet historic town today, used to be the largest city in Custer County.

Founded in 1878, Challis lost many of its original architecture during the 1983 earthquake, but some have been rebuilt. This nostalgic place is full of character and a visit here will take you back in time of the mining and Western history.

The main street is not very long, but full of typical Wild West type of wooden buildings. I got inspired by this picturesque Wild West town and I made both of these images as digital paintings. They can greatly decorate any hotels in Idaho as framed art prints, canvas or other types of prints.

In the Western regions of the USA, it’s not rare to see animals in the streets… I was however surprised to see a deer running on the main street in downtown Challis in the middle of the day – no question this is a quiet place… 🙂

The town is also a very friendly place, not so quiet in the past… 🙂

Arch to Arch

Arch to Arch Citta della Pieve Umbria Italy

Arch to Arch

Citta della Pieve is a beautiful medieval hill town in Umbria in Central Italy. This image shows a view down through a dark alleyway under a stone archway. We look through to the bright sunshine beyond. The sun highlights the old stone walls and shuttered windows. There is a second archway that provides a walk through between doorways. Through that you can see down to the street beyond. So we look from the dark shade of one arch to a second arch highlighted in the bright sunlight.

About Citta della Pieve

Citta della Pieve is famous for the local production of red terracotta bricks that are evident in the architecture of the town. Set high on a hill side, the town benefits from cool breezes during the hot summers but is also quite cold in the winter.

The main car parks are situated outside the town walls. Find a space and walk through one of the beautiful archways in the town walls.  Immediately you find beautiful cobbled streets and wonderful architecture.  As you walk through the town there are an endless narrow passageways and connecting streets, many with little or no vehicular traffic. It really is a lovely place to wander around. You can buy souvenirs and local produce from the many quaint shops. There are also bars/cafes where you can rest your feet, drink a cappuccino or beer and watch the world walk past your table.

Throughout the year, Citta della Pieve has various festivals including one celebrating, saffron, grown locally. The town also participates in Umbria Jazz. This is an annual event with late warm evenings listening to jazz under the Italian night sky.
